JUNIORS SELECTED FOR SUMMER TRAINING CAMPS
Julie Emmerson W16 and Hamish Rogers M16 have been selected to join the national British Orienteering Talent Development Coaching Camp which takes place in July at Badaguish, in the Cairngorms, Scotland. Also going to Scotland is Aimee Morse W16 to the Junior Regional Squad in Kincraig and Harrison McCartney M14 to the Junior Regional Squad camp in Lagganlia. Matt Elkington M18 and Julie Emmerson W16 are travelling to Sweden to train with the Junior Regional Squad rising 18 year olds.
As part of Kenilworth Festival the club staged an orienteering event for all ages based at Kenilworth Sports and Science School. Under 16s ran two courses around the school grounds, organised by Barry and Mel Elkington, and seniors experienced two demanding around the town urban courses planned by Mike Hampton. On the long urban 5.7k course Alan Segar M35 came 1st in 52.01mins, Hamish Rogers M16 was 2nd in 56mins and Jane Halliday W50 was 3rd in 59.34mins.
Riina Kuuselo W21 was 1st on the 3.8k urban event in 33.21mins, Barry Elkington M55 2nd in 38.12mins and Sami Takaluoma M35 3rd in 41.42mins. The short 1k sprint was won by new club members William Heaton M14 in 11.09mins 2nd was Alfie Bullus M12 in 12.58mins and 3rd Matthew Kermode M12 in 15.49mins. Jeremy Knott M16 won the 1.1k sprint in 7.57mins tying with John Embrey M50 and 2nd was Michael Hanson Morris M20 in 8.58mins.
In the Lake District this weekend the two day High Dam event was attended by club members and Riina Kuuselo W21 came 1st on Day 1 on the 7.2k course in 1.01.19mins, Sami Takaluoma M35 2nd on the 5.5k course in 58.39mins and Sheila Carey W65 1st on the 3.2k course in 42.16mins. On Day 2 Hilary Simpson W70 was 2nd on the 2.5k course in 52.16mins.

DOUBLE FOR RIINA
At the Dales Town and Country Weekend Riina Kuuselo W21 came first on both her courses. On Saturday the Urban race around the towns of Settle and Giggleswick in North Yorkshire saw Riina’s winning time of 43.41mins hard to beat on the 6.3k course. Sheila Carey W65 was also placed first on her 4.1k course in 45.43mins and our other first runner home was Mike Hampton M65 on the 5.3k course.
Riina’s time of 1.00.45mins on the Short Brown 9k course with 310 metres of climb at North Kilnsey was best on the day. Mike Hampton was 6th in 54.02mins on the 6.4k Short Blue course as was Sheila Carey on the Green 4.7k course in 49.47mins.
Graham Urquhart organised three good courses around the popular and technical Bentley Woods event near Atherstone. Despite the consistent rain pouring down many juniors enjoyed the short Yellow course. The three top places went to Olivia James W12 1st in 21.52mins, Asim Poptani M12 2nd 25.34mins and Visva Moorthy M12 3rd 25.51mins all pupils from King Henry VIII School, Coventry.
On the longer Orange course Aimee Morse W16 came 1st in 19.14mins, Robert Titterington M70 Leicester Orienteering was 2nd in 26.55 and James Dance M18 3rd in 29.28mins. Harrison McCartney M14 won the long Green course in 29.06mins; Richard Deardon M40 from Harlequins was 2nd in 31.10mins and Riina Kuuselo W21 3rd in 31.27mins.
An Introduction to Orienteering event was staged at Daventry Country Park as part of their Countryside Day. Phil Kirk planned and set out the course and Karin Kirk, Richard Gardner and Jill Emmerson helped newcomers try out the sport. Over 60 participants enjoyed the challenge and the top 5 finishers were: Aleksandrs Ivanovs 4.48mins, Sam Lockwood 5.01mins, George King 5.27mins, Neil, Rihanna and Ethan Varney 5.47mins and Andy and Astrid Bow 5.51mins.
