CLUB MEMBERS WIN 9 TROPHIES AT WEST MIDLANDS RELAYS
Thelma Spalton, organiser, Bob Brandon, planner and many helpers from Octavian Droobers staged the annual West Midlands inter club relays at Pooley Fields Country Park near Polesworth in the north of the county. 54 Droobers competed in teams of 3 and won 9 out of the 12 classes entered. ‘It was a brilliant result especially as we had so many new members competing in their first relay competition,’ said vice captain Suzanne Humphries.
Suzanne was very pleased that the young juniors won back the Mini relay trophy after a few years gap. The team of Olivia Bailey, Matthew Kermode and Luke Cherry just held off their competitors by only 3 seconds. Alfie Bullus, Heather Rogers and Alex Bailey won the Junior Men’s Trophy and Stephen Elkington, Guy Ross and John Leyden won the Intermediate Men. Lesley Ross, Anne Straube and Amy Sarkies running as the ‘OD All Stars’ took the Open Women’s Trophy beating the OD Superstars team into 2nd place. Alan Segar, Matthew Elkington and Will Gardner ‘OD Lightning Bolts’ shot round to win the Men’s Open Trophy and Liz Cross, Liz Phillips and Jill Emmerson took the Senior Women Prize.
Margaret Willdig, Lin Page and Jane Halliday won the Veteran Women’s event and in the Super Veteran category both the Men’s team of John Ward, Peter Carey and Gerry Spalton and Women’s team of Sheila Carey, Karin Kirk and Greta Greenall all came up trumps and triumphed. All teams were presented with trophies and received prizes by sponsors BUFF headwear.

JUNIORS TO REPRESENT ENGLAND
Congratulations to Harrison McCartney M14, Julie Emmerson W16 and Matt Elkington M18 who have been selected to represent England at the Junior Home Internationals to be held in October near Dorking in Surrey.
Peter and Sheila Carey both came 1st in their respective classes at the Nottingham City Urban League event held this weekend. Peter M65 completed his 4.1k course in 32.09mins and Sheila W65 her 3.8k course in 35.36mins. Also at Nottingham Will Gardner M20 came 2nd in the Men’s 7.1k Open course in 41.22mins and Anne Straube W35 3rd in 44.15mins on the 5.8k Open Women’s course.
JULIE HAS SUCCESSFUL EUROPEAN DEBUT
Julie Emmerson achieved great results in the Great Britain team at the European Youth Championships held in France this weekend. Her training over the winter working on her technical skills with coach Riina Kuuselo, paid off as she is currently topping the GB W16 ranking list.
Julie joined the GB team, at Bugeat in the Limousin area of France, of 11 juniors aged 15 to 18 years to compete against 30 nations and over 350 competitors. At the sprint staged in Meymac town centre on Friday she finished 12th out of 85 starters in 12.24mins in the W16 event, 48 secs behind the winner and was the highest placed GB finisher. The Saturday long distance 4.7k course in forests with marshy areas and steep rocky slopes at Viam Lestards was testing and Julie came 7th out of 85 in 42.30 mins, 5.07 mins behind winner. On the 3rd day her team finished 10th in the relays, Julie was on the 1st leg and handed over to the 2nd leg runner in 3rd place out of over 20 teams.
