SHEILA AND RIINA COME FIRST AT WELSH SIX DAYS
Over 2000 entrants including 800 from 24 countries competed at the Welsh 6 Days event based at Aberystwyth and staged in sunshine on the beautiful surrounding hills and mountains. There were some outstanding performances amongst the group from Octavian Droobers Orienteering Club.
Sheila Carey W65 achieved the best set of results at the event being the only competitor to come first on each of the 6 days and it was announced at the prize giving that it was exactly 40 years ago since her appearance at the Olympic Games in Munich 1972 in the 1500m final.
Club member Riina Kuuselo was awarded first place in the W21 Long class after winning two coming second in three and a third in the six events. Anne Straube W35 Long came 2nd overall in her class after the 6 events with 3 2nds 2 3rds and a 5th place. Sami Takaluoma was placed 2nd overall on the short M35 course.
Congratulations to the other top 5 orienteers: Hilary Simpson W70 who came 4th overall in her class and Lesley Ross W45 5th. Mike Hampton M65 came 2nd on the 6th day in the Urban event running around Aberystwyth University Campus.

CLUB MEMBERS WIN 9 TROPHIES AT WEST MIDLANDS RELAYS
Thelma Spalton, organiser, Bob Brandon, planner and many helpers from Octavian Droobers staged the annual West Midlands inter club relays at Pooley Fields Country Park near Polesworth in the north of the county. 54 Droobers competed in teams of 3 and won 9 out of the 12 classes entered. ‘It was a brilliant result especially as we had so many new members competing in their first relay competition,’ said vice captain Suzanne Humphries.
Suzanne was very pleased that the young juniors won back the Mini relay trophy after a few years gap. The team of Olivia Bailey, Matthew Kermode and Luke Cherry just held off their competitors by only 3 seconds. Alfie Bullus, Heather Rogers and Alex Bailey won the Junior Men’s Trophy and Stephen Elkington, Guy Ross and John Leyden won the Intermediate Men. Lesley Ross, Anne Straube and Amy Sarkies running as the ‘OD All Stars’ took the Open Women’s Trophy beating the OD Superstars team into 2nd place. Alan Segar, Matthew Elkington and Will Gardner ‘OD Lightning Bolts’ shot round to win the Men’s Open Trophy and Liz Cross, Liz Phillips and Jill Emmerson took the Senior Women Prize.
Margaret Willdig, Lin Page and Jane Halliday won the Veteran Women’s event and in the Super Veteran category both the Men’s team of John Ward, Peter Carey and Gerry Spalton and Women’s team of Sheila Carey, Karin Kirk and Greta Greenall all came up trumps and triumphed. All teams were presented with trophies and received prizes by sponsors BUFF headwear.
