ORIENTEERING RESULTS FROM FAR AND WIDE
Orienteers from the Octavian Droobers Orienteering Club were competing at many events around the UK this weekend, from Scotland in the north down to the far south in urban and forested areas.
In Devon at the annual Caddihoe Chase weekend Toni O’Donovan W35 was the overall winner of the W21 class after coming first on both days with a total of 161.17mins, taking 77.32mins on the 7.6km Day 1 course and 83.54mins on the 7.5km Day 2 course. Mike Snell M55 was placed 6th overall in his class with a total of 179.14mins.
At the Leicestershire Urban event held at Loughborough Harrison McCartney M18 was fastest on the longest course of 8km. He took 46.18mins to find and punch 30 controls and Nathan Lawson was second not far behind in 48.40mins. On the 6.6km course with 26 controls Chris McCartney M45 was 3rd in 38.41mins and David Lawson M50 4th in 40.18mins. Bruce Bryant was 4th on the 3.6km Course 4 taking 27.48mins and Pete Carey M70 9th in 33.03mins. Sheila Carey won the 3.2km course in 28.53mins and Sue Bicknell W70 6th in 46.39mins.
Harrison McCartney was 6th at Burnham Beeches event staged by Happy Herts Club, taking 50.03mins on the Blue 6.22km course.
Anne Straube W40 was 2nd in 40.05mins on the Blue 4.4km course at Bowden Housteads middle distance event in South Yorkshire and 6 year old son Max Straube-Roth was 4th on the White 1.1km course taking 14.36mins.
In Scotland Carolyn Marr was 3rd on the Short Green 2.9km course taking 38.22mins at the Border Liners event at Faulds Brow and also in Scotland Kirsten Strain W21 was top female runner on the Brown 6km course in 53.08mins at the middle distance event at Anagach in the Cairngorms. Kirsten was also 3rd placed female runner on the 10.17km Brown course in 1.21.19min at Loch Vaa, near Aviemore.

ENGLAND AND REGIONAL SELECTIONS
Congratulations to club members who have been selected to represent England in the forthcoming Home Internationals. The England Orienteering Council have announced both the Junior and the Veteran teams and Harrison McCartney M18 will represent England in the Junior Home International team event taking place in October in Northern Ireland. Andy Simpson M40, Anne Straube W40 and Lesley Ross W45 will be wearing their England kit at the Veteran Home International to be held in Wales in October. Sheila Carey W65 is a reserve.
Several club juniors have been selected to represent the West Midlands Region at the Junior Inter Regional Competition. The West Midlands team will be competing against the rest of the country, Wales and Scotland on Cannock Chase in September. Congratulations to Felix Lunn, Oliver Lunn, Oliver Flippance, Alfie Bullus, Sam Leadley, Stephen Elkington, Nathan Lawson, Harrison McCartney, Aimee Morse, Heather Rogers and Rhiannon Cope.
With 6 events to go Octavian Droobers are currently in 3rd position, with 4917 points, in the national UK Orienteering League. Leading club individual in 3rd place in the league with 491 points is Anne Straube W40. After 7 events Octavian Droobers top the West Midlands League with 7077 points well ahead of Wrekin’s 6256. Peter Markham M12, Sam Leadley M16, Lesley Ross W45 and Roger Hailey M75 have all scored the maximum 500 points each, having won their class in 5 events. The next league event is on 4th October at Chatterley Whitfield, organised by the Potteries Orienteering Club.
