OCTAVIAN DROOBERS WIN LAURIE BRADLEY TROPHY
The annual New Year’s Day West Midlands interclub competition, the Laurie Bradley Trophy, was this year organised by Wrekin Orienteers and held at Telford Town Park, Shropshire. Six teams competed for the trophy and club captain, Alistair Powell, was very pleased with club member’s performances around the very wet and muddy park grounds.
The winning score was 4640 points achieved by Droobers top 25 runners across 16 age categories. Each orienteer had to navigate and find as many controls earning 10 points each within the 1 hour time limit. Wrekin Orienteers were 2nd with 4470 points and Walton Chasers 3rd with 4150 points.
The highest scorers for the club were Barry Elkington and Andy Emmerson who both found 24 controls earning 240 points. Oliver Lunn, Chris McCartney, Felix Lunn scored 230 points, Dave Marr, Rob Smart and Stan Alexander 210 points, Bob Brandon 200, Jill Emmerson, Gerry Spalton and Richard Steel 190 points. Alistair Powell scored 180, Kevin Ross 170, Tabitha Lunn running with Josie Smart scored 160, as did Nathan Chapple, Carolyn Marr, Cameron Williams-Stein, John Ward, Phil May and Trevor Hyde. Pippa Smart running with Florence Lunn, Sue Hallett, Karin and Phil Kirk all scored 150.
At the RAF Halton base in the Chilterns several club members had good runs around the camp and the winner of the Mens Open 6.4km course with 30 controls was Will Gardner M21 taking 30.14mins, Harrison McCartney M18 was 3rd in 35.03mins and Robert Gardner M21 4th in 35.08mins. Florence Lunn W12 won the 12 and under 1.8km course finding 13 controls in 13.05mins and Tabitha Lunn was 4th in 14.15mins. Felix Lunn M14 was 3rd on the 3.1km course for under 16’s in 18.05mins just ahead of 4th placed brother Oliver Lunn M14 18.39mins. Lesley Ross W50 was top woman on the W40 + 5.4km course taking 36.44mins.

DROOBERS SELECTED TO RUN AT INTERLAND
Congratulations to junior orienteer, Oliver Lunn M14 who has been selected to represent England at Interland. The England Orienteering Council have so far confirmed that two Octavian Droobers Oliver and Lesley Ross W45, a successful international orienteer, will be going to Antwerp, Belgium to the annual Interland Cup, between Belgium, Netherlands, NE France and England, on 21 February next year. Oliver’s debut appearance for his country comes after successfully competing at 4 autumn selection races.

XMAS RELAYS ROUGH CLOSE, COVENTRY
After the Christmas festivities a great day out was had by club members and visitors at the annual Christmas Relays. The organisers, the Smart and Lunn families were especially pleased that there was no rain although the going underfoot was pretty muddy and flooded areas were marked so as to be avoided.
Competitors had the option of forming teams to run the 4 legs or going it alone. The overall handicap winner was Harrison McCartney M18 who completed all four legs in a time of 52.08 minutes over the total distance of 9.8km. Matt Elkington M20 was the fastest solo performer taking 51.31mins and the junior competition was won by the twin pairs of Tabitha and Florence Lunn W12 running with Rachel and Julie Emmerson W20.
