WEEKEND RESULTS FROM CITIES, PARKS AND WOODS
Oxfordshire hosted two events over this weekend, the popular Oxford City Race, organised by Oxford University Orienteering Club and one at nearby Shotover Country Park, staged by Thames Valley Orienteering Club.
The City Race, with support from University Parks and various colleges who granted access, Magdalen, St Anne’s, Wadham and New, gave competitors some intricate route choices. Alfie Bullus M16 won the Men Junior 3.4km race in 22.45mins. New junior Adam Landels was 7th on the Men Young Junior course in 25.18mins. Harrison McCartney M18, now at Oxford University was 2nd in the Mens Open 8.2km course in 50.53mins and Chris McCartney M45 was 6th in 47.45mins on the Mens Veteran 6.9km course. Mike Hampton M70 was 8th on the Mens Ultra Vet 3.9km Course in 44.30mins.
Harriet Lawson W21 was 4th on the Womens Open 6.9km course in 53.59mins as was Liz Phillips W50 on the Womens Vet 5.3km course in 49.50mins. Sheila Carey W70 was 3rd on the 3.3km Womens Ultra Vet course in 42.29mins. At Shotover Max Straube-Roth M10 was 3rd on the short white 1.2km course in 13.31mins and his mother, Anne Straube W40, top woman on the Blue 6.2km course taking 59.03mins.
On Sunday, Norwich City held the final Urban Race in the UK League. After 18 events, up and down the country, many competitors were seeking to raise their position in the league and Alfie Bullus came 2nd on the Mens Junior 3km course in 20.27mins only 7 seconds behind the winner. It was enough though to give him the UK title for the top Mens Junior 16 years and under having completed 7 races and scoring 593points from his best 6 races.
Liz Phillips W50 was 2nd on the 5km Womens Vet in 52.20mins Mike Hampton M70 was 5th in the Mens Ultra Vet 4km course in 41.40mins earning him 5th place overall in the UK Urban League. Other results: Nadine Wright W21 was 8th on the 6km Womens Course in 67.07mins, Liz Urquhart W60 was 10th on the Womens Super Vet 4km course in 87.26mins.
The popularity of orienteering around cities is really growing and OD members are doing well. Other top ten places gained in the 2016 UK Urban league are: Chris McCartney M45 2nd Veteran Men, Liz Phillips W50 2nd Veteran Women, Mike Hampton M70 5th Ultravet Men, David Chandler M21 10th in the Mens Open,
British Orienteering Head Coach, Paul Murgatroyd, has announced that Harrison McCartney M18 has been invited to join the 2016-17 British Orienteering Talent Programme, and Julie Emmerson W20 will be joining the Watch Squad.

LAKE DISTRICT
The two day weekend in the South Lakes was held on sand dunes at Roanhead on Saturday followed by complex open Lakeland fell at Torver High Common event on Sunday.
The ladies took the honours at the middle distance race on Saturday: Liz Phillips W50 won the 3.1km Green Women course in 34.06mins and Jill Emmerson W50 was 2nd in 37.05mins. Anne Straube W40 was 2nd on the Blue Women 3.8km course in 38.50mins. Kirsten Strain was 6th W21 on the Brown 4.3km, with 205 metres of climb taking 41.59mins and Carolyn Marr was 6th W65 on the 2.5km Short Green course 41.09mins. Congratulations to young Max Straube-Roth who was top M10 taking 17.32mins on the 1.9km Yellow course.
On Sunday at the long distance event Nathan Lawson was top M20 on the longest Black 10.8km course with 480 metres of climb taking 72.45mins. Kirsten Strain was 2nd W21 on the Short Brown 7.9km course in 66.28mins. On the Blue 6.9km course with 200 metres of climb new club members had good results: Mykyta Chubynsky was top M40 and Paul Gregson 2nd M35. On the same course Dave Marr was 2nd M65 in 77.18mins, Anne Straube W40 was 2nd in her age group in 72.54mins and Rob Smart was 3rd M45. On the Short Blue 5.2km course Daniel Roth was top M45 in 51.36mins, Liz Phillips 4th W50 in 60.09mins. Andy Emmerson was top M60 on the Green 4.1km course in 39.36mins and Mike Hampton 5th M70 in 55.45mins. Carolyn Marr was 4th W65 on the Short Green 3.4km course in 54.25mins. On the Orange 2km course Josie Smart was 2nd W12 in 24.34mins and Max Straube-Roth 5th M10 on the Yellow 1.3km course.
At Bradgate Park, Leicestershire, Alfie Bullus M16 was 2nd on the 6.3km Blue course in 47.03mins with 230 metres of climb and Aleksandrs Ivanovs M35 was 3rd in 47.12mins.
