WELSH 5 DAYS AND WORLD UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS
At the World University Championships in Hungary, club member Will Gardner, representing GB and University of Sheffield, has had a great start coming 6th, in the sprint Race in 15.02mins behind a terrific performance by fellow team member, Kris Jones, Ulster University, who took the Gold for GB in a time of 13.49mins.
The Welsh Five Day Orienteering event centred around Margam Park, provided some testing and varied terrain, from high sand dunes to parkland forests and Brecon moorland. The overall results taking the best 4 results from the 5 saw two club members win their class to take 1st places: Anne Straube W40 who was 1st on Days 1, 4 and 5 and 2nd on Days 2 and 3 and Sheila Carey W70 who was 1st on the first 4 days.
Liz Phillips came 4th overall having been placed 2nd, 3rd 5th and 9th in 4 of the events. Competing for the first time in a multi-day event in an age class was Max Straube-Roth who came 2nd overall in the M10B category, achieving 3rd, 4th, 5th and 2nd places.
Top 10 places overall were earned by Sue Bicknell 7th on the W70L courses Nathan Lawson 9th on the M21L courses, Daniel Roth 9th on the M45Short courses and Margaret Willdig 9th on the W60L course
Other results at the event included: in the M14 class Felix Lunn’s 3rd place on Day 3, Oliver Lunn’s 4th place on Day 1 and Oliver Flippance’s 7th place on Day 4 in the M14 category. Day 1 3rd, Day 2 4th and Day 3 8th places for Sue Hallett W70L, a 6th place for Alexandrs Ivanovs M35Short on Day 1, Bruce Bryant M55 L 6th on Day 1, and 6th on Day 3 on the M55 short course, Andy Emmerson M60L 8th on Day 1, Peter Carey M70L 8th on Day 1, Mike Hampton M70L 3rd Day 1, Tilly Flippance débuting on W10B 5th on Days 2 and 3 and Jill Emmerson W50L 8th on Day 1.

LEAGUE LEADERS AT HALF WAY STAGE
After 7 events in the West Midlands Orienteering League Octavian Droobers have a commanding lead of over 500 points, 6599, over nearest rivals Wrekin 6088 and Walton Chasers 5850. The fifteen club scorers include Barry Elkington M60, Peter Carey M70 and Sheila Carey W70 who each have scored the maximum of 500 points having won their class in 5 of the 7 fixtures so far.
Other scorers: Florence Lunn W12 495, David Leadley M50 484, Finley Flippance M12 463, Sue Hallett W70 450, Oliver Flippance M14 443, Lin Page W60 435, Tabitha Lunn W12 431, Liam Chapple M45 416, David Dunn M35 404, Liz Phillips W50 400, Richard Steel M50 372 and Jill Emerson W50 306. With 6 more fixtures planned around the Midlands in the autumn the club hope to increase this lead.
Manchester Orienteering Club staged a weekend of sprint and urban races and Mike Hampton M70 came 3rd overall in his class after two sprint races at Ollerton taking a total of 26.55mins only 1 minute behind the leader. Liz Phillips W50 also came 3rd taking 28.38mins overall. At the Urban race around Manchester City Liz Phillips was 6th in 53.37mins on the 5.6km W40+ Veteran course and Mike Hampton was 7th in 40.27mins on the 4.2km M65+ Ultra Vet course.
At the French 6 Days of Orienteering in the Midi Pyrenees, in the preliminary event prior to the main programme, club members had some good results: Hilary Simpson W75 1st in 27.21mins, Nathan Lawson M20 4th in 15.26mins as was Barry Elkington M60 in 14.17mins and Trevor Simpson M75 in 25.29mins.
Steph Howarth organised the local event at Brueton Park, Solihull, and 60 runners competed on the 3 courses: Winner of the Short 2.5km course was Joe Quinney M12 who found the 12 controls in 14.53mins; David Knott M12 was 2nd in 20.47mins and Robert Morris M21 3rd in 25.28mins. Paul Quinney M45 won the Medium 3.6km course in 22.47mins; Kerrie Flippance W40 was 2nd in 23.01mins and Pippa Smart W14 3rd in 25.09mins. The challenging Nav’O’gation 4.2km course saw Oliver Lunn M14 win in 27.17mins just ahead of David Dunn M35 27.27mins and Mike Snell M60 27.30mins.
