BRITISH UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Will Gardner, in his first year at Sheffield University, came 7th in the Men’s individual event at the British University Clubs Orienteering Championships held on Burbage Moor, Sheffield. He took 66.24mins, running 6.3 mins per kilometre on the 10.5k course with 365 metres of climb, less than 3 minutes behind the winner. Sophie Kirk, representing Imperial College, came 10th in the Women’s race taking 64.15mins on the 7.1k course with 220 metres of climb. The following day saw Will Gardner with his team come in second in the men’s relays. Sophie’s team won the ad hoc class.

At Crich Chase, Belper, several club members had good runs in the East Midlands League including Nathan Lawson M16 who won the Blue 5.2k course with 260 metres of climb in 49.29mins, sister Harriet Lawson W18 4th in 56.06mins, Tony Feltbower M55 5th in 56.49mins and David Lawson M50 6th in 57.18mins.

The popular Burnham Beeches and Egypt Wood event organised by Happy Herts orienteering club attracted over 30 club members and Harrison McCartney was the 2nd M16 on the Short Brown 8.9k course with 150 metres of climb taking 67.00mins to complete the course. Riina Kuuselo W35 was the top woman on the Blue 7.3k course in 59.59mins and Julie Emmerson the best W18 in 65.16mins on the same course. Rachel Emmerson W18 was the top girl on the 5.8k Short Blue course in 59.45mins and Suzanne Humphries the leading W45 in 60.51mins. On the short Green 3.8k course Roger Hailey was top M75 finishing in 53.13mins. In second place were juniors Ella-Rose McCartney W14 42.56mins and Alfie Bullus M14 45.08mins on the 3.8k Light Green Course.

Keith and Margaret Willdig organised three courses at Bramcote Army Barrack, Nuneaton.

Twenty seven competitors took on the challenging ‘Dogbone’ score event and Chris McCartney M40 scored the maximum 300 points visiting all the controls in 44.20mins, Mark Bailey M50 44.29mins and Nick Wilson M14 from Leicester 46.52mins. On the medium 3.7k course with 16 controls Riina Kuuselo W35 took 22.37mins ahead of Andy Cherry M40 25.05mins and Suzanne Humphries W45 27.23mins. Pippa Smart W10 won the short 2.4k course in 19.47mins, second was M Spencer W35 took 32.01mins and Nicholas Buckley M12 third in 32.54mins.

During half term ten OD juniors joined the technical training session run by West Midlands Junior Squad on The Gower in South Wales, the session was aimed at improving detailed contour reading prior to the Worlds Schools Championships in Portugal.
