 Organisers' Comments

I hope you all enjoyed the lovely evening and it certainly drew a lot of runners, including beginners trying it all for the first time.

Sadly, all urban and park events are prone to vandalism and a few controls were misplaced at times, often ending up in the brooks. Thank you to those who fished them out and put them back, although some went walkabouts again. One control has not been found, no.137 in the corner of the small playground, despite being cable-tied to the fence. This is perhaps something to remember for the next urban organiser to be reminded.

Thank you to those who helped collect in controls, and we all had left Abbey Fields by 9.15.

And finally, thank you to our sponsors, NFU Mutual, for the goodie bags and their support of OD.

Well this was the first time that I'd helped organise an Orienteering event.  I know that events only happen if people volunteer, so I agreed to help Tony and plan the Park courses.  Although the idea of planning was daunting, I’m glad to say that the reality was fine.

Thanks to Bob Brandon & Bruce Bryant for assisting with planning, extra gratitude to John Bowman for putting out the controls, running a course, then staying to help collect them in, sacrificing a pair of scissors in the process!  Also thanks to Barry Elkington, Mike Snell, Pippa & Josie for collecting controls; John Cherry on matching results and Karin for helping new runners. Thanks to the Juniors for distributing the NFU Mutual goodie bags.

As can be expected, I’ve learnt lots and I left room for improvement for next time.  I was a bit unsure how many Park maps to order, I didn’t want to run out, so I was conscious of wasting the clubs money when I got 32% more Short and 92% more Medium than we’d used last year.  We ran out of both, so sorry if you had to wait a few minutes for a map, and thanks to those who recycled.

I had a couple of panics on download, caused when Tony had to run off to attend to the vandalism.  I didn’t know where the printer paper was kept, (let me know if you didn’t get a copy of your splits and would like a one), or where the battery charger was for the final two runners to download.  My thanks to the runner whose Emit Brikke failed and was very understanding.

Well done if this was your first time Orienteering, keep an eye on the website and do try it again soon!  The Spring sunshine was wonderful, it was great to see so many people taking part, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!  Contact Bob if you fancy helping at a future event.

Lastly, special thanks to Lucy.
