Organiser's Comments

When I volunteered as a late replacement for this event, the intention was to use the spare maps of the courses planned by Amy Sarkies for the event in November 2012. I decided to add a Blue course and forwarded it to Bruce. We agreed that one of the controls in the wood could be vulnerable to vandalism so moved it further in – hence control 130. Having changed one control on the Green course we agreed to make further alterations so that it was slightly shorter than the original.

Borough Hill has an interesting history. At one time it was an Iron Age fort of some considerable size. Later Charles1 was encamped here in 1645 before being forced to retreat northwards, where he was eventually defeated at Naseby, 12 miles away. In more recent years it was the base of the BBC’s communication network and was covered with radio masts. The concrete boulders are what remains of this period.

I should like to thank Phil May for handling registration and control collecting, Mike Hampton for download, John Middler + two also for control collection and Bruce for the Map and planning suggestions. Finally appreciation should also go to the cattle who wintered on the hill and valiantly ate their way through the grass, making the area pleasantly runnable on the night.
