Octavian Droobers Club member John Ward planned and organised 3 testing orienteering courses, Yellow 1.4k, Orange 2.4k and Green 4k around Everdon Stubbs woods, near Daventry. The event attracted a wide variety of runners and walkers of all ages from around the Midlands. There were several new participants who enjoyed the challenge of navigating through the woods visiting control points in sequence using a detailed and specially drawn map, compass and electronic timing units. 

On the short Yellow course junior member Alfred Bullus M12 came 1st in 15.10mins. Ben James M12 and Henry Winser M12 tied for second place in 15.22mins. On the Orange 2.4k course club member Eleanor Beach W14 was 1st in 31.10mins and Volker Beck M35 was 2nd in 32.59mins, Ros James W50 South Midlands 3rd 39.24mins. The club welcomed a new runner Paulius Tamosaitis M21, from Lithuania, who won the Green 4k course in 26.46mins, Sami Takalloma M35 was 2nd 27.59mins and 3rd David Williams M45, Harlequins, 28.37min. 

Several club members travelled to Ashridge, near Berkhamsted, to a regional event organised by Hertfordshire Orienteering Club. Nearly 500 competitors competed in the Ace of Herts competition and Ella Rose McCartney W12 OD came 4th overall on the Orange 3k race and 1st in her age group in 35.05mins. 

On the Green 6k course Sheila Carey W65 came 6th overall in 48.30mins, coming 1st in her age group with Sue Hallett W65 coming 2nd in 69mins. On the 8.2k Blue course Harrison McCartney M14 came 1st in his age group in 65.49mins. Also on the Blue in their age class Bruce Bryant M50 was 1st 62.24mins, Suzanne Humphries W45 1st in 73.12mins and Liz Cross W40 4th in 75.05mins. Sophie Kirk W20 came 9th overall, top woman runner, on the Short Brown 10.2k course winning her age class in 65.04mins. 

At the Brindley and Hednesford event on Cannock Chase organised by Walton Chasers new club member Riina Kuuselo W21 came 2nd on the 7.26k Blue course in 45.33mins, Matt Elkington M16 was 2nd 46.44mins beating dad Barry Elkington M55 into 4th place in 49.26mins. Also on the Blue course was Julie Emmerson W16 who clocked 63.13mins also beating her Dad, club captain Andy Emmerson 64.13mins. Full results are on the Walton Chasers website.  

Mike Hampton M65 came 3rd on the Urban race in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, as part of the two day Burns Weekend.

It was a close fought battle with only a few points separating Octavian Droobers from Harlequins Orienteering Club in 2nd and Walton chasers in 3rd, said club Captain Andy Emmerson. OD scored 2398 points Harlequins 2356 and Walton Chasers 2202 at the Compass sport cup qualifying round held at Sutton Park, near Sutton Coldfield on Sunday. The win means that club members will be travelling to compete in the final on 16 October at Longshaw near Chesterfield. 

The top 25 scorers from a team of over 80 achieved some fantastic fast runs and Andy Simpson M35 came 1st on the long 9.1k Brown course in 52.56mins scoring maximum 100 points. Also on the Brown course Iain Embrey M21 came 3rd 54.05mins scoring 98 points.  

On the Blue Women’s 6.8k course new member and Finnish international Riina Kuuselo W21 came 2nd in 42.09mins, Amy Sarkies W21 3rd 47 mins 96points, Toni Donovan W21 4th 47.56mins 94 points and Lesley Ross W45 5th 50.39mins 92 points. Matthew Elkington M16 running up earned valuable 94 points on the 7.1 Blue Men’s course coming 7th in 51.22mins. 

Mike Hampton M65 was 3rd on the 4.7k Green Men’s course in 32.43mins gaining 96 points and on the Women’s Green 4.6k course Liz Phillips W45 had a tremendous score of 100 points coming 1st in 38.49mins. Emma Kettley W18 running up a class was 3rd in 40.29mins with 98 points and Suzanne Humphries W45 was 4th in 40.58mins, 96 points. Sheila Carey gained 96 points coming 5th in 39.34mins on the 3.4k Short Green Vets course. 

Harrison McCartney M14 ran up a class and came 1st, scoring 100points on the Light Green Junior Boys 3.9k course in 23.17mins, joint 2nd was Hamish Rogers M16 25mins 96 points and 4th Calum Barnetson M18 27.32mins. Julie Emmerson W16 scored 100points coming 1st on the Light Green Junior Girls course in 29.39mins, Rachel Emmerson W16 2nd 31.39mins 96 points and Tamsin Alcock W16 4th in 41.13mins. 

The youngest competitors on the short Orange course put in great performances with 7 boys and girls scoring: Boys: 1st with 100 points Stephen Elkington M14 in 18.31mins, 2nd Jamie Nicolson M12 22.33mins 96 points, 4th Tom Ross M14 37.39mins, and Girls: 1st Aimee Morse W14 22.04mins, 100 points, 2nd Ella-Rose McCartney W12 27.25mins 96 points, 3rd Annabel Rayner W14 29.49mins 92 points and 5th Zoe Nicolson W14 33.14mins 88 points.
