TOP PODIUM PLACES AT BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS
The annual British Championships were held in the Forest of Dean and junior and senior club members competed in the Long Distance, Trail O and Relay Championships at a great weekend organised by Bristol Orienteering Klub. Five of our orienteers were presented with prizes and medals at the long distance event.
The hotly contested Elite races for men and women of 18 and 20 years saw great successes for Octavian Droobers star performers: Julie Emmerson came 2nd in 67.38mins on the W20 Elite class 7.7km course with 300 metres of climb as did Harrison McCartney in 74.28mins on the M18 Elite class 11.3km course with 430 metres of climb. Other great podium performances were achieved by: Anne Straube who came 2nd in the W40 Long 7.6km course with 230 metres of climb taking 74.05mins, Lesley Ross 2nd on the W45 Long 7.8km course in 66.41mins and Sheila Carey 3rd on the 5.8km course taking 67.12mins.
Championship Times were awarded to several club members who ran very well in their respective classes: Harriet Lawson for her 6th place in the W20 Elite class taking 79.04mins, Kirsten Strain 7th in 94.20mins and Toni Oā€™Donovan 15th in 103.05mins both on the W21 Elite class 11.2km course, Mateusz Podsiadly 9th in 83.58mins on the M20 Elite class 11.3km course, Alistair Powell 11th in 92.17mins in the M35L class 11km course, Barry Elkington 16th in 80.03mins in the M55L class 9km course, Tony Feltbower 13th in 74.58mins in the 8.2km M60L class.
The Trail O competition was won by Anne Straube and Peter Markham was 2nd placed junior.
Best placed teams in the relays were 5th place for Oliver, Florence and Felix Lunn in the M14 race, 6th place for Harriet Lawson, Toni Oā€™Donovan and Kirsten Strain in the Womenā€™s Premier, 7th place for Pippa Smart, Tabitha Lunn and Peter Markham in the M/W12 Mini relay race, 8th place for Barry Elkington, Tony Feltbower and Robert Brandon in the M50 race and 8th place in the Mens Premier for the Sheffield University team comprising two OD club members: Matthew Elkington and Will Gardner and fellow University team mate Adam Potter.

OD TRIO SELECTED TO RUN FOR GREAT BRITAIN
Following very successful runs at selection races including the JK2015 three young OD club members have been selected to represent Great Britain at international events this summer. Congratulations go to: Julie Emmerson W20 who will be competing in the World Cup Round 2 in early June in Norway and Sweden: Matthew Elkington M20 and Julie who have both been selected to run in the Junior World Orienteering Championships in July in Norway: Harrison McCartney M18 has been selected for the GB team in the European Youth Orienteering Championship which will be held in Romania at the end of June. This is great news and all club members wish them every success.
The West Midlands ranking event held at Kinver Edge, near Stourbridge, organised by Harlequins Orienteering Club, was well attended by club members and top ten places were achieved by several. On the very short White course youngster Max Straube-Roth came first in 22.13min. Roger Hailey M75 was 1st on the Orange 1.9km course and wife Diana Hailey W70 was 2nd in 30.24mins, Pippa Smart W12 was 5th 32.04mins, Nathan Chapple M14 6th 33.28mins and Tabitha Lunn W12 7th 35.24mins.
On the Short Green 2.8km course John Bowman M70 was 5th in 44.21mins, Janet Richardson W65 8th 47.11mins and Hilary Simpson W75 10th 49.45mins. Anne Straube W40 won the Green 3.3km course in 35.17mins and Felix Lunn M14 was 3rd in 36.21mins, Stephen Bates M65 4th 39.55mins, Liz Phillips W50 8th 44.13mins and Pete Carey M70 9th in 45.16mins. Lesley Ross W45 was 4th on the Blue 4.3km course in 43.11mins.
Harrison McCartney M18 won the long Brown 7.2km course with 330 metres of climb in 51.08mins and Nathan Lawson M18 was 2nd in 54.44mins, Julie Emmerson W20 was 4th in 1.02.11mins, David Lawson M50 7th in 1.08.59mins and Andy Emmerson M55 8th 1.10.52mins.
