WARWICKSHIRE SCHOOLS ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIPS
On Saturday Octavian Droobers staged a very popular and successful schools championships at the Memorial Park in Coventry. The rain stayed away and the blossom on the trees made a picturesque setting for the start and event arena. Organiser Phil May and a team of helpers ensured a smooth operation from the start to the finish for students from 17 schools around Coventry and Warwickshire. The event also attracted several beginners and experienced orienteers from around the area.
Barry Elkington, club chairman, handed out prizes to winning individuals and schools. Individual winners of the Year 5 Girl’s were Olivia Sarkies and Georgia Dowling, running as a pair from Crescent, Tilly Flippance, Parkhill Junior, was 2nd and Hannah Wheeler, Stivichall Primary, 3rd. Max Straube-Roth, Grange Farm Primary, was the top Year 5 Boy, Rory Sarkies and Thomas Brinklow, Crescent, were 2nd and Sebastian MacGibbon, Bablake Junior, was 3rd. Year 6 Girls winner was Emily Soane and Laura Masera, St Augustine’s Kenilworth, and Rosie Bonvey, 74th Coventry Scouts, was 2nd. Giacomo MacGibbon, Bablake Junior, won the Year 6 Boys class, Lewis Oxtoby, King Henry VIII Preparatory, was 2nd and Adrian Jaros, 74th Coventry Scouts, was 3rd.
Lower Secondary Girls course was won by Pippa Smart, Myton, Martha Curran, Kenilworth, was 2nd and Florence Lunn, Kenilworth, 3rd. Nathan Chapple, Kenilworth, was top Lower Secondary Boy, 2nd was Cameron Williams-Stein, Kenilworth, and Christian Roberts, Kenilworth, 3rd. Louise Woolley, King Henry VIII, was the winner of the Upper Secondary Girls competition , Hannah Matthews, Kenilworth, was 2nd and Holly Glover, Kenilworth, was 3rd. Felix Lunn, was the winner of the Upper Secondary Boys race, Oliver Lunn was 2nd and Oliver Flippance 3rd, all Kenilworth School.
School Team results: Bablake Junior School, Coventry were top Primary School, with Crescent School, Rugby, in 2nd place and 3rd place was awarded to the 74th Coventry Scout Troop. Congratulations to Kenilworth School and Sixth Form who took 1st place in both the Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary category. Southam College were 2nd Lower Secondary and King Henry VIII School, Coventry, were 3rd. King Henry VIII were 2nd Upper Secondary team and Bablake Senior School 3rd.
OCTAVIAN DROOBERS THROUGH TO NATIONAL INTER CLUB FINAL
This year the club competed at Parkhall Country Park, near Stoke on Trent in the preliminary heat of the National Inter club Compass Sport Cup. To get to the final the club’s challenge was to finish ahead of Deeside Orienteering Club, last year’s 4th placed club in the final. The terrific score of 2446 points against DEE 2418 points, saw the club through to compete in the final in October on Dartmoor, Devon. Club members turned out in force and this great team effort was praised by Vice Captain David Chandler.
The top 25 scorers for the club were:
William Gardner M21 scored 100 points to win in 46.53mins, Duncan Birtwistle M21 was 2nd with 99 points and Alistair Powell M35 scored 97 all on the Brown course. 1st place for Nathan Lawson M20 (100 points), 2nd for Alistair Landels M45 (99) and Chris McCartney M45 scored 97 on the Short Brown Course. On the Blue women’s course Anne Straube W40 scored 99 and Juliette Soulard W45 98, David Lawson M50 scored 97 and David Leadley M50 96 on the Blue Mens course. Lesley Ross W50 was 2nd on the Green Women’s course scoring 99, Liz Phillips W50 4th 97 points and Jill Emmerson W50 96 points. Andy Emmerson M60 won the Green Men’s course scoring the maximum 100 points, Barry Elkington M60 was 3rd 98 points and Mike Snell M60 scored 95.
On the Veterans Short Green course Mike Hampton M70 was 2nd scoring 99, Peter Carey M70 was 4th 97 points and Margaret Willdig W60 scored 95 points. The club did well on the junior courses with Felix Lunn M16 winning and scoring 100 points on the Junior Men’s course and Oliver Lunn M16 was 2nd with 98 points. Nathan Chapple M14 won the Orange course by 10 mins scoring 100 points and Cameron Williams-Stein M14 scored 96 points. Pippa Smart W14 scored 98 points and Florence Lunn W12 96 points on the Orange Women’s course.

BRITISH NIGHT CHAMPIONSHIPS, NORTHERN CHAMPS,
NETTLEBED AND LINDOP WOODS RESULTS
British Orienteering Night Championships took place this weekend at Great Tower in the Lake District and using head torches in heavy mist proved very challenging with several competitors retiring. OD Club runners produced some good results however and congratulations go to Sheila Carey who became champion W70 completing the 3.13km course in 93.52mins. Other good results: Nathan Lawson 2nd M20 in 79.58mins and Harrison McCartney 3rd in 81.25mins on the 3.08km course with 275 metres of climb, Julie Emmerson was 4th on the W21 6.22km course with 365 metres of climb taking 73.04mins, Liz Phillips was 4th on the W50 4.04km course with 210 metres of climb in 80.17mins, Bruce Bryant was 7th on the M60 4.88km course in 87.19mins, Roman Kotecky 9th on the M65 4.04km course in 103.54mins and Peter Carey was 7th on the M70 3.43km course in 75.46mins.
On the following day, Lakeland Orienteering Club staged the Northern Championships at Bigland. This event is one of the selection races for summer tours and training camps for juniors and for many it was their first experience of tackling some extremely tough age group courses and top ten finishers were: Finley Flippance 7th on the 3.2km M12 course in 72.15mins and Felix Lunn 7th M16 in 68.49mins on the 6.8km course.
Other senior top ten places achieved were: Harrison McCartney M20 2nd 9.6km course in 84.21mins, Hilary Simpson W75 2nd in 92.43mins on the 3.3km course, Sheila Carey W70 3rd in 90.44mins and Sue Hallett W70 5th in 118.48mins on the 4.2km course, Julie Emmerson W21 8th 9.6km course in 104.02mins, Duncan Birtwistle M21 9th 14km course with a huge 730 metres of climb in 122.37mins, Barry Elkington M60 10th 6.8km course in 88.56mins,
Several club members opted for events nearer to home and Lesley Ross W50 was top woman on the 7.3km course with 120 metres of climb. She took 59.01mins to find the 16 controls positioned around the beautiful woods at Nettlebed, near Henley-on-Thames, on the Chiltern Hills. Margaret Willdig was top W60 woman on the Green 3.9km course at Lindop Woods, Derbyshire taking 53.31mins.
