OD TEAM AMASS 2116 POINTS AND 5TH PLACE AT COMPASS SPORT CUP FINAL

A team of 60 club members, smaller than usual, nearly made it into 4th place this year, behind Deeside Orienteers 2161 points. The top 3 teams were Forth Valley with 2366, last year’s winner, South Yorkshire 2314 and Bristol Orienteers 2313.

South Yorkshire were the organisers of the national interclub event, sponsored by Compass Sport Orienteering Magazine, held in the woods at Tankersley, near Sheffield. Early runners had the disadvantage of heavy rain and the terrain proved quite tricky, a bit slippery with up to 280 metres of climb on courses, and controls were placed in some quite hard to find locations.   

Alistair Powell, club captain was pleased with the overall result as the club moved up from 8th place last year, gained by some outstanding runs: 1st place for Felix Lunn M14 on the Orange 3.1km which took him 20.57mins and scored the maximum  100 points, Julie Emmerson W20 was 2nd in 35.52mins on the 4.5km Green Women course and scored 99 points and Rachel Emmerson W20 was 4th in 4056mins, scoring 97, Barry Elkington M60 was 4th on the Green Men 4.6km course in 41.34, scoring 97 points just 1 second ahead of Richard Gardner M60 scoring 96 points, 6th place for Peter Carey M70 took 45.09mins on the Short Green Veterans course scoring 98 points and on the longest Brown 9.8km course Matthew Elkington M21 was 8th and finding the 38 controls in 58.35mins scoring 95 points and William Gardner M21 took 60.49mins scoring 93.

The remainder of the 25 club members who made up the total score running on their respective courses were: Alistair Powell M35 70 points, Dave Chandler M21 60, Chris McCartney M45 65, Kirsten Strain W21 94, Anne Straube W40 81, Bruce Bryant M55 71, David Leadley M50 67, Lesley Ross W50 87, Liz Phillips W50 82, Tony Feltbower M60 88 points, Sheila Carey W70 89, Mike Hampton M70 88, Gerry Spalton M70 75, Sam Leadley M16 76, Oliver Flippance M14 86, Oliver Lunn M14 84, Pippa Smart W14 78.

In addition to the competition courses there was a beginners White 1.7km course and Tilly Flippance W10 came 1st out of 23 competitors, finding 11 controls in 13.51mins, a star in the making.
