SCHOOL CHAMPIONS

 

 

The inaugural schools championships, organised by Octavian Droobers, for Coventry Warwickshire and surrounding areas was very well supported by 14 primary and secondary schools.  At the Memorial Park, Coventry, there were some excellent runs from both experienced and novice orienteers from nearly 100 entries.

The results of the school teams were:  Primary Schools - 1st place St Augustine’s, Kenilworth 44 points, All Saints, Leek Wootton 38 points and Park Hill, Kenilworth 23 points.  The Lower Secondary School teams results were:  in 1st place Kenilworth School with 67 points, Southam College 2nd with 53 points and King Henry VIII, Coventry, were 3rd with 31 points. Kenilworth School also won the Upper Secondary Trophy with 76 points ahead of King Henry VIII 68 points and Bablake School, Coventry 46 points.

Individual results for Primary Schools on the White 1km course were:

Year 5 Girl’s Laura Masera & Emily Soane, running as a pair from St Augustine’s RC, Kenilworth were 1st and found the 10 controls in 13.42mins and Tilly Flippance, Park Hill Junior, Kenilworth was 2nd in 15.46mins.  Year 5 Boys: 1st Giacomo MacGibbon, Bablake Junior, 5.48mins, 2nd Lewis Oxtoby, King Henry VIII Preparatory, 7.26mins  and 3rd Chris Markham, Bournebrook, Fillongley, 7.44mins. Also on the White course, Year 6 Girl’s results were 1st for Tabitha Lunn 5.24mins and 2nd for Florence Lunn in 5.53mins both from All Saints, Leek Wootton. Year 6 Boy’s results were 1st Eoin Hankinson & Jacob Beaven 6.47mins, 2nd Freddie Ridge & Daniel Atkinson 7.18mins, both pairs from St Augustine’s, Kenilworth and Finley Flippance, Park Hill Junior 3rd in 9mins.

Running on the Yellow 1.9km course in the Lower Secondary Schools competition Felix Lunn was 1st placed boy finding 14 controls in 8.36mins ahead of Oliver Flippance 9.33mins and Oliver Lunn 9.42mins, all from Kenilworth School. Girl’s results for Lower Secondary Schools were 1st Joanna Leadley, Stratford Girls Grammar School 11.31mins, 2nd Holly Glover 12.32mins, Kenilworth School and 3rd Issie Fairhurst 13.12mins, Southam College.

Winner of the Upper Secondary Schools Boy’s category was Harrison McCartney taking 10.50mins on the Orange 2.8km course, joint second places went to Stephen Elkington, Kenilworth School and Sam Leadley King Edward VI, Stratford, both on 14.36mins. Heather Rogers was top girl coming 1st in 16.15mins, Hannah Mathews 2nd in 19mins and Catherine Beattie 3rd in 21.22mins, all from Kenilworth School.

This event, organised by Phil May, was run alongside the regular Saturday morning event and on the addition longer Green 4.75km course with 19 controls, Chris McCartney M45 was 1st in 24.20mins, David Leadley M50 2nd in 26.40mins and Graham Capper from EBOR orienteers was 3rd in 31.03mins.
