ORIENTEERING – CLUB SUCCESSES AROUND THE MIDLANDS
Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire was the venue for the East Midlands Regional urban race. Sue Bicknell W75 won the Women’s Hyper Vet course of 3.3km in 41.51mins and Mike Hampton M70 was 6th on the Men’s Ultra Vet 4.2km course taking 42.45mins.
Burbage Village Urban in Leicestershire saw some fast running by Chris McCartney M50 to take the lead in 32.53mins on the Long 4.8km course just ahead of Kin Wai Lee M21 33.39mins. David Lawson M55 was 4th in 36.57mins and top woman Harriet Lawson W21 8th in 41.59mins. Joanne Leigh W50 was 5th on the Medium 3.1km course in 32.17mins and Hilary May W65 1st in 29.48mins on the Short 1.8km course.
At the Grangewood event organised by Derwent Valley Orienteers, Chris McCartney M50 was placed 6th on the longest 8.1km course taking 63.11mins to find all 28 control points and Anne Straube W45 was the top woman with a time of 68.56mins.
ORIENTEERING – GARDNER FAMILY TRI-UMPH
Linford Wood and surrounding streets and parkland in Milton Keynes was the setting for the Orienteering race organised by South Midlands Orienteering Club. Many Octavian Droobers entered the competition and the members of the Octavian Droober Gardner family took 1st places on each of the three planned courses.
Leading the field was GB orienteer William Gardner M21 on the longest course, 6.6km, navigating to all 24 control points in only 31.35min, over 6 minutes ahead of Scott Collier M21 from Kerno, Cornwall Orienteering Club. Barry Elkington M60 was 6th in 41.31mins and Sophie Kirk W21 was the fastest woman taking 47.20mins.
Richard Gardner M65 was 1st on the Medium 4.8km course in 34 mins just ahead of 2nd placed Bruce Bryant M60 who took 34.45mins. Liz Phillips W55 was 7th in 40.08mins.
Sian Gardner W60 had a fast run around the Short 3.1km course taking 33.39mins only 2 seconds ahead of second placed Milly Askham W16 from SMOC and Hilary May W65 was 6th in 45.23mins.
