Good weather was a blessing and the strong turnout very pleasing for the UWOC
event.
We also benefited from the quality facilities in the Cryfield Pavilion which I
hope everyone utilised (those who used the showers will not have been
disappointed!). I thank Warwick Sport for allowing our commandeering of the
centre for the day.
My planner Matt Rooke put together some good courses, indeed the only grumblings
that reached me were to do with the rather muddy stretches on the West side of
campus on some of the longer courses..
It was with a little hesitation that I first took on my role as organiser for
this event but the support of the planner Matt and controller Tony Feltbower and
the rest of the UWOC club as well as my kind OD helpers & equipment on the
day made the whole experience pretty painless.
Thank you to all who helped and to all who came and competed (or both!).

Thanks all for coming to race. I hope you enjoyed it and thank you all who
gave me feedback, it was my first time planning anything decent. It sounds like
most people had a good time and the weather certainly helped.
With the British Sprints not being very long ago, from the outset I wanted to
use the whole of the available area to make it different and worthwhile coming
back to the campus. This meant there was some map fiddling to be done to combine
the two new sprint maps and an older one of the surrounding land. Thanks to Iain
Embrey for help with that and Bruce Bryant for supplying some central campus
updates. It did result in quite an interesting map combining the sprint
specification on campus with an enlargement of a standard map elsewhere (with
two contour intervals, thankfully the area is pretty flat!). There were areas
where it was a bit oversimplified on the longer courses but I think it had all
the essential information and allowed a good mix of campus, parkland and
streets. Sorry about the mud and swollen rivers, I'm glad to hear some of you
braved it and crossed them. There were bridges very near by though.
The short/junior courses were a challenge to get right as well. I thought it was
best to use a non-sprint map for these courses and that allowed me to use the
playing fields area for more freedom, and provide a nice loop for the White. I
apologise for the courses being a little long, especially Orange. That was me
messing up the map scales when sticking two maps together to get a complete West
Campus map and not realising until it was too late to do anything except tell
you how far they actually were.
Thanks again, and extra thanks to those who allowed their Blue map to be
re-used. If you are still missing one email exec [at] uwoc.co.uk
with your address and we will post you a copy.
