  • These exercises involve matching map symbols to control description symbols.
  • This isn't what control descriptions are normally used for but is a useful way to understand how the map symbols relate to the control description symbols.
  • It's also good practise for understanding compass directions on rotated maps where north is not up.
  • If you find it too difficult, the controls are interactive. Showing the text description costs 25% energy per control.
  • If you don't need the extra hints, avoid clicking / tapping the controls to save energy or turn off hints in  Settings

Controls:

  • Mouse:
    • hold the left button down with the cursor over the 3D model.
    • Left / right to rotate, up / down to tilt. Wheel to zoom.
    • Single-click to change the centre of rotation.
    • Click off the model to recenter.
    • To make it easier, click on a control to see a text description. This uses up 25% energy per control
  • Touchscreen:
    • drag left / right to rotate, up / down to tilt, pinch to zoom.
    • Tap to change the centre of rotation.
    • Tap off the model to recenter.
    • To make it easier, tap on a control to see a text description. This uses up 25% energy per control
  • Keyboard:
    • left / right arrow keys to rotate, up / down arrow keys to tilt
    • Pg Up / Pg Dn to zoom
    • Tab to select control, model or control descriptions
    • To make it easier, press Enter on a control to view text description. This uses up 25% energy per control

What to do:

  • Look at the 4 sets of control descriptions and try to work out which set matches the 3D model (rotating the model may help you figure it out).
  • Click once / tap screen / press Enter key on the correct control descriptions.
  • The rotation of the map does not matter for this type of exercise
  • If you're correct you'll hear a beep, see CORRECT! at the bottom of the screen and the next model will load.
  • If you select the wrong control descriptions, you'll get a hint at the bottom of the screen and can retry until your energy runs out.
  • When you run out of energy, press Restart to have another go or use the menu to try a different exercise. The Out of Energy dialog tells you which control descriptions were correct. They are numbered 1 to 4 left to right.
  • Once you've got used to the idea of how it works, move on to the exercises in the Map Symbol Matching section of the menu which can be found at the top-left of the page.
  • Your energy reduces with time. Each incorrect attempt uses 25% of energy. Every 5 correct gives you an energy boost.
  • In Settings you can change the rate at which your energy runs out to increase difficulty and boost your score.
  • You can also enable random ordering of the control descriptions in Settings to increase difficulty and boost your score even more.
  • The random rotation setting does not apply to this type of exercise.
