Miners’ Welfare Park
Wednesday Evening Event 26th
May 2010 On the plus side were
a fine evening, a well drawn map, a good turnout and tolerant competitors. Only
the local vandals and subsequent loss of equipment spoilt the night. Also, the
council had asked us to use the cricket club car park, but failed to inform us
that there would be a match. However, I think everyone managed to find a parking
space. The first few competitors had the pleasure of finding all the controls in
place and late starters had to decide whether to spend time looking hard for
controls that were made “not too obvious” or continue and assume them
stolen. As a result there are no DQs for missing controls in the results. Thank
you to those who replaced punches found thrown around. Some broken punches were
still used (in two pieces). One punch even moved from Loop 2 (8) to Loop 1 (1).
The area has not been used for a few years because of just this problem
with local youths. Total losses amounted to 1 bent stake, 5 broken punches and 6
missing along with 4 bottles (easily replaced).
Most people were very understanding and said they enjoyed their run
round. It would be a pity not to use this map again but maybe we should use
equipment that is of no interest at all to the vandals (carrier bag with
letter??). We have a bag of uncollected
Loop 1 maps which we intend to take around to events until there is no further
interest. Please ask if you would like to reclaim yours (usually from a VW
Passat VF55 ENL). Thanks to Bob Brandon
(download without a compass), Karin Kirk (information), Bruce Bryant (for map
and updates), John Bowman (for liaison with council), Mike Hampton and the
Urquharts (for equipment) and Amy Jones for the offer of help. Sheila and Pete |
