Organisers' comments (Liz Urquhart)
We always organise sunshine for Burton Dassett -a little too much this time ? A big thank you to everyone who turned up to help, as we were unusually short of available Droobers. We were so impressed by the way all helpers arrived on time, took over their jobs, and left us very little to do. (Liz was spotted sat in a chair with a book at one point - this is what organising should be like !). Thank-you also to the early arrivals from TVOC, who spotted things that needed doing and volunteered their services - plenty of true orienteering spirit around on the day.
Planners Comments (John Ward)
Burton Dassett in July is usually a signal for warm weather, but this year must have been the hottest. It meant that for once the early starters had an advantage. Of the courses, Orange seemed to present the most difficulty. I did initially intend bringing competitors up from the northern end, but this would inevitably have led to them using the dirt road, which could have been dangerous with the traffic, especially on a sharp bend. The Green course fitted well on the two maps, but it was a bit tight with the Blue, which may have compromised the quality of some of the legs. On both courses I aimed at a mixture of long and short legs, with competitors needing to slow down for the complex area in the centre of the map. As far as possible I tried to make the controls not visible from one to the other, which is important in open areas.
My thanks go to Bruce for the accuracy of the map, Bob for overprinting the courses, Martin for his controlling , the Furnesses and the Emmersons for control collection and all the helpers, especially the Urquharts, who worked so hard in the hot weather.
Controller's Comments (Martin Cross)
Once again, a well-planned and well-organised event at Burton Dassett: my thanks to John Ward and the Urquharts for making my task so simple. The Orange course proved to have one or two legs that competitors found hard: a reminder that catching features beyond the control (such as the road) can take much of the difficulty out of route choice.
In future we will aim to make sure that there are demonstration controls (especially unfamiliar flat controls) at registration or the start. All in all, however, a good day in the sun.
