URBAN, MOUNTAIN, FELL, FOREST AND PARKS

The anticipated West Midlands league at Mansty Wood, Cannock Chase, fell foul of the huge amount of rain and was called off because of a waterlogged car park. Octavian Droobers orienteers were able to compete elsewhere on a wide variety of terrains and at the 2nd round of the Mini Mountain Marathon series at Grasmere, Lake District, Carolyn Marr was 1st in the Female Veterans 60 years category scoring 110 points, in 3hours 53.12mins, navigating on steep mountain terrain to find 6 controls within the time limit of 4 hours. Dave Marr, in the Male Veteran 60 class, was 2nd with 220 points, finding 10 controls, covering 20km and climbing 1500 metres,  in 3hours 56.02mins. 

The two day Northern Championships Weekend started with an Urban event in Whitby. Julie Emmerson was 1st on the W20 Elite Sprint course taking 13.04mins; Harrison McCartney was 6th on the M18E sprint course in 14.58mins and Max Straube-Roth 6th on the Young Junior course in 18.23mins. On Sunday, at Mulgrave Wood, a hilly and physically tough forested area, on the Elite courses, Harrison McCartney was top M18 on Course 3 in 35.48mins and Julie Emmerson 2nd W20 on Course 4 in 36.52mins. On the senior courses Anne Straube was 2nd W40 on Course 9 in 69.32mins. Oliver Flippance M14 was 6th on Course 17 taking 52.31mins and Max Straube-Roth M10 was 5th on Course 21 in 23.29mins.

Club members had some enjoyable and successful parkland runs around the Ouzel Valley and Open University at Milton Keynes. Top juniors were: Felix Lunn M14 was 1st on the 5km course in 27.59mins, Oliver Lunn M14 was 2nd in 30.10mins and Pippa Smart W14 was 6th in 38.46mins. Mike Hampton M70 was 5th in 43.22mins on the 5km course at the Warminster Urban race around the town, organised by Salisbury Orienteering Club.

Congratulations to Will Gardner, University of Sheffield, who has been selected to represent GB in the World University Orienteering Championships to be held in Hungary at the end of July. He will be running in the Sprint, Middle Distance and Relay races.
