WHITE ROSE WEEKEND, URBAN AND LONG MYND HILL TRIAL EVENTS

A large group of club members enjoyed the sunshine and a variety of different events at the annual White Rose Weekend held near Gilling Castle in North Yorkshire. Events included two main orienteering events on the Saturday and Sunday, a sprint, a team relay, a night score, mountain bike and Trail ‘O’ which took place in the Gilling forest, surrounding parkland and in the castle grounds.

After completing the two main events four club members clocked up top combined scores: Aimee Morse who came 1st overall on the W18 Long course having come 1st on Day 1 and 2nd on Day 2; Roger Hailey overall 1st on his M75 Long Course coming in first place on both days; Sheila Carey 1st on the W65 Long Course with first place on Day 1 and 2nd on Day 2 ; Diana Hailey 1st on the W70 short course with 3rd and 1st places.

Anne Straube was placed 2nd overall on the W35 Long course as was John Middler on the M60 short course and 3rd overall places were awarded to Hilary Simpson on the W70 Long course and to Mike Hampton on the M65 Long course. Congratulations to first timers Alfie Bullus 6th on the M14 courses, Rhiannon Cope 7th on the W16 courses, Alexia Cope 9th on the W45 Short courses and to Aleksandrs Ivanovs M21 12th competing on his first Black course.

At the night event, Anne Straube was placed 2nd scoring 190 points in the senior women’s class as was Sheila Carey who scored 140 points in the Senior Veteran Women’s class and Bob Brandon was placed 4th in the senior veteran men’s event scoring 175 points. Aimee and Bob both came in 4th in their classes in the Sprint Race taking 14.46mins and 15.39mins respectively. Daniel Roth was the highest placed man in the Trail ‘O’ competition and Alfie Bullus was 4th in the Junior Men’s event.

Three Urban events around the country attracted club members: Don Valley in Yorkshire where Harrison McCartney M16 took 1st place on the 5k course in 27.58mins, Sheila Carey W65 1st on the 3.3k course in 36.18mins and Mike Hampton M65 2nd on the 4.8k course in 39.50mins. Lincoln City Race saw Sheila Carey come 2nd on the 3.5k course in 42.56mins, Mike Hampton 4th on the 4.4k course in 36.35mins and Bruce Bryant 6th in 38.28mins. The Harwell Campus, near Abingdon was the venue for the third Urban event and William Gardner M20 came in 3rd overall on the Open Men’s Class only 15 seconds behind the winner, Liz Phillips was placed 5th in the Veteran Women’s class, Richard Gardner 7th in the SuperVet Men’s class and Mike Hampton 3rd in the UltraVet Men’s class.

At the Long Mynd moorland and valley orienteering challenge event, organised by Wrekin Orienteers, Dave Marr came in 11th place in 193.27mins on the 15.7k course, Mike King was 14th in 218.25mins and Tony Feltblower 2nd in 151.43 on the 12k course. On the short 9k course John Ward was 6th in 141.52mins.
