SHEILA CAREY WINS UK MASTERS CUP

Congratulations go to Sheila Carey who has won the UK Masters Cup for W65 category.

2011 was the first year in which the CompassPoint sponsored event for 35 years and older has taken place. The competition was based on the best eight results from a possible 19 top level events held around the country throughout the year. The competitions incorporated a variety of events - night, long, middle, sprint and urban.

This weekend Sheila came 4th in 49.07mins on the Green course on difficult and steep terrain in Shining Cliff Woods high above the Derwent River Valley in Derbyshire not far behind Harrison McCartney M14, who had a great run and came in first in 43.59mins. Over 450 competitors including OD club members travelled from around the midlands and further afield to this event and organisers, Derwent Valley Orienteers, had to reissue maps to cope with the demand .

At Warwick University Debbie Morse organised the first junior club training session of the year. Eighteen young orienteers, 10 – 16 years, enjoyed navigating around the campus buildings and open parkland using maps and exercises prepared by Barry Elkington. Several experienced club members helped and assisted with coaching and advice. The next junior coaching event will take place during half term and will be at Rough Close, Coventry, on Thursday 16 February. It will be run in the early evening to give juniors an opportunity to experience night orienteering using head torches.
