Planner’s comments:
The main challenge of the area was to get good length junior courses while avoiding the dead running along the surrounding straight streets. It meant that Whinfield Park and the adjoining urban parkland had to be used to give choices out and back into the start/finish area. The land was quite boggy when I first visited in December but that did not worry me as it could not get wetter than it was. Every subsequent visit, it was definitely wetter than previously, but I still had the same thought – right until the Sunday before the event when I finally accepted that it could get wetter…..
The area was not very intricate so I tried to introduce 50:50 route choices where possible and the hilly nature helped because contours needed to be taken into account on some route choices. There had to be more running on the parkland than I would have liked, especially given how the weather had been, so I decided to put it at the end of most courses to waken the brains after all of the road running. However, it did mean that most of you had a pleasant hilly finish!!

Organisers’ comments:

As this was our first attempt at organising a regional event, we were anxious to get everything right on the day. However, with a beautiful sunny morning, we didn’t need to worry as ‘Team OD’ arrived and whizzed into action, and before long we had three tents up for registration, download and first aid and the start all set out and ready for business.
We just want to say a very big thank you to all of our wonderful helpers, too numerous to mention, but you did a great job in putting everything out and then a few hours later, collecting it all back in again.
Finally, thank you to Rugby Town FC for allowing us to use their car park, Rugby BC for allowing us to put on the event and the Rugby Advertiser for the publicity prior to the event and a full page article covering the event on the day.
