OCTAVIAN DROOBERS ARE CHAMPIONS

After 10 league events throughout the year Octavian Droobers have emerged as the winning club in the West Midland Orienteering League. The score of 7420 points was well ahead of second placed Walton Chasers 6953 points and Wrekin’s 3rd place 6803 points.

Congratulations to the top scoring 15 club members who contributed to the final tally.

Scoring a maximum of 500 points by winning their courses in 5 of the league events, was Sam Leadley M14, Stephen Elkington M18, Alistair Powell M35, Anne Straube W35, Suzanne Humphries W50, Peter Carey M70, Roger Hailey M75, Florence Lunn W10, and Sheila Carey W65. Chris McCartney M45 scored 490 points Barry Elkington M55 484 points, David Leadley M50 466 points, Hilary Simpson W75 496 points, Felix Lunn M12 492 points and Robert Brandon M65 492 points.

At the Chillington Hall, Staffordshire, event organised by Walton Chasers many club members competed on the estate grounds to become West Midlands Champions. Octavian Droobers claimed 12 titles. The top junior girl was Pippa Smart who won the W12 trophy and 3 junior boys won their respective classes: Felix Lunn M12, Alfie Bullus M14 and Stephen Elkington M18.

Mateusz Podsiadly was awarded the M20 trophy, Alistair Powell the M35, Chris McCartney the M40 and Barry Elkington the M55. Lesley Ross won the W35 trophy, Margaret Willdig the W60, Sheila Carey the W65 and Hilary Simpson the W75.

This weekend the club are competing for the prestigious national inter club Compass Sport Cup Championship. The club qualified for the final which is being held at Long Valley, North Aldershot, and organised by Southern Navigators. Club Captain Alistair Powell is hoping that the team will be bringing the cup back this year and improve on last year’s second place.
